Why switch to thermostatic valves

The thermostatic valves help you to keep a constant temperature in the rooms you want. They allow you to realize energy savings by using the "free contribution" (sunshine, insert, people in the room...).

The use of the thermostatic valve help to realize savings up to 20% .

*Be careful, don’t forget to let one or two radiators equipped only with a simple radiator head (no thermostatic).

Major components

A thermostatic valve is composed by a body valve and a thermostatic head.

The thermostatic head reacts to temperature variations in the room and shut down the valve according to your needs.

This reaction is due to an thermosensitive element located in the radiator head

By turning the radiator’s head, you can select the temperature you want. You can install easily the thermostatic head, without any tools.

Advised settings :

  • Position * corresponds to a temperature around 7°C (freeze protection)
  • Position 1 corresponds to a temperature around 12°C.
  • Position 2 corresponds to a temperature around 17°C. For bedrooms
  • Position 3 corresponds to a temperature around 20°C. For the hall, the corridor
  • Position 4 corresponds to a temperature around 23°C. For the living room
  • Position 5 corresponds to a temperature around 25°C. For the bathrooms

 

Assembly

When you install a thermostatic body with or without preset bend, use a watertightness bend or a watertightness product. In order to help you to install a thermostatic head, look at our video

 

How to select the adapted thermostatic head

The European standard thread of the thermostatic heads is 30 x 1.5.

However, not all the manufacturer use those dimensions. Pay attention to the old models without this thread.

Install a thermostatic head of the same brand as the thermostatic body for a compatibility issue, otherwise, change them both.

Choose a thermostatic head with a temporal variation of low T°: example: your choice is the 19°C in the room, the real temperature is of 19,2°C.

The more is the temperature slow, the more is the head performing.

 

These positions can be different according to the heating builder..

These thermostatic head models are equipped with ergots to limit the temperature range (example position 2 to 4 = temperature 16 to 22 °C).

 

Technical comments

A thermostatic head limits the room temperature and controls the radiator mass flow (sometimes hot on the top and cold on the bottom).

How to avoid the blocking risks ?

Wide open every radiator valve in the spring when you don’t need to use your radiators.

During winter, in the vacant rooms, turn occasionally the radiator’s head.

The whistles

First check if the whistle come from the thermostatic valve by turning it from the close position to the open position (the whistle comes generally from the close position).

Slow down the boiler pump, if it’s possible.

Maintenance

If the cable gland is ok, fill it in the valve body, with the silicone alimentary grease for domestic plumbing.

Then, operate the stem cable gland a dozen times to diffuse the grease in the body valve.

If the valve stem is blocked, lightly tap on the stem cable gland with a mallet until the stem stand out.
