How to choose a smoke detector?

I. What do you have to know about smoke detectors?

 

Before buying a smoke detector, make sure your smoke detector is:

  • In compliance with the NF EN 14604 standard which guarantees to the consumer that every detector contains certain indications registered in an indelible way: name and address of the manufacturer, the standard reference, the date of manufacture or batch number, recommended replacement time. The battery lifetime is minimum 1 year. The alarm signal is different than the «low battery" signal or the “battery absence” signal. The detector is equipped with a test button allowing checking that the detector is functioning properly.
  • In compliance with the NF292 standard which guarantees to the consumer that the product uses the principle of light distribution or transmission, does not contain radioactive substances, deliveredwith batteries, informative index card, note of installation and maintenance.

2. About the Law

According to the law, before 8 Mars 2015, all the housing must be equipped with at least a smoke detector (only for home located in France). In France, the home fires are responsible for hundreds of deaths every year. The purpose is to reduce considerably the number of victims. If a home fire begins, the occupants will be warned by a sound signal.

The article 71 of the Macron law, specifies that the owners has signed a purchase Smoke detector contract before March 8th, 2015, the smoke detectors have to be installed before January 1st, 2016. This decision justifies itself by the fact that the law ALUR of March 24th, 2014 has transferred the financial charge of the installation of the smoke detector from the occupant to the accommodation’s owner.

3. Who has to install a smoke detector?

The law Alur of March 24th, 2014 specifies that the purchase and the installation of smoke detectors is chargeable to the owner.

Case 1: if the accommodation is rent before the 9th March, 2015, the tenant has to install the detector. The owner can supply the smoke detector to his tenant or pay off the detector bought by this one.

Case 2: if the housing is rented after March 9th, 2015, the owner has to supply and install the smoke detector.

It is forbidden to install smoke detectors in the common parts of buildings.
